Wigan Album

What memories this brings back. I was Baptized here, made my First Holy Communion here and was confirmed here. I was married in the new church on Sherwood Drive. My grandma was the church cleaner at one point and I remember Mrs Heyes used to play the organ. I remember the Crowning of Our Lady in May and Cannon Carney. Lovely happy times.

The photo also brings back memories for me of the times spent in Pemberton Bradshaws Girl, I'm not Catholic nor did I go in there, however there is a photo of the interior of the church on the Album of which I commented that I wouldn't have imagined it to be so ornate as it was.

It must have been extremely loud inside when it was pouring down or hailstoning.
I don't recall this church, but by what I can see (photograph) it was a large church. Quite amazing to see a church of that size built out of tin sheets.
When was it built?

I cannot remember as to whether are not both sections of the roads were named Ormskirk Road, as St Cuthbert’s R.C. Church was on land that divided Ormskirk Road. Where the road became one thoroughfare again, was the Carnegie Library.

Albert, going up towards Pemberton from Newtown Ormskirk Road is on the left hand side of the Carnegie Library and Ellesmere Road is on the right side, there is a ground fault along there which is mentioned on the above church website, so maybe when building the houses along Ormskirk Road it was routed that way so as to avoid it?

Albert Ormskirk Rd. and Ellesmere Rd. the school next door was on Ormskirk Rd.

Thank you Cyril and Bewley. Interesting. Was it a bit of a conundrum relating to addressing property on that particular stretch of land?. I suppose the night club that was on that part of Ormskirk Road, in the early sixties has been long time gone?.

I was born on Ormskirk Road ,actually were the "Bargain Booze Shop " stands were actually 6 terraced 2 up 2 down house's ,so i knew /know the area quite well. From were i was going towards Wigan was on the right it used to be the Carlton Cinema /.Sportman's /Carpet Store , across the then cinema was the street wereST.CUTHBERT'S was a bit further along toward's Carnegie Library was the ST.CUTHBERT'S school . The road on the opposite of Ormskirk Road ,was ELLESMERE Road , back to were i lived across the road was THE HALFWAY HOUSE PUB , Round the corner of the shop where i lived was /is Belle Vue ST ,where the RAVINE CLUB IS TODAY i would spend many happy hours watching the bowling there ,they had a lovely crown green area . I would like to thank RON HUNT for publishing the photo bring back many,many fond memories for me .
