Reference to Ron's photo #33606 recently, this is the woods as it was in 1964 with the Douglas in flood. Ignore the person in the shot but notice the footbridge in the background as it has a centre support pier. According to my diary entry for the date, Accessed the area from the canal bridge, past the hall and followed footpaths through the woods crossing 2 footbridges and past the reservoirs and onto Platt Lane/ Bradley Lane and home. Wigan Corporation Water works owned the 3 reservoirs according to the 1950's map.

This is strange as, as far as I'm aware there, there's only been one bridge over the Douglas at Arley. The next one up stream is near Aberdeen Canal Bridge at Common End south of Adlington.

Last week, decided on spur of moment to revisit the area after 50+ years. The bridge has gone and been replaced with a single span metal one though one could see the "remains" of the central pier. The most notable part of the walk was how the area has changed -it was only a small golf course in those days and the maps named it as Arley Golf Club. No wonder I lost my bearings at times. A revisit is planned now to complete the walk. Travelling back through Standish late afternoon traffic on Rectory Lane/High street lights was like it was pre M6 days in the summer.
What has happened to the Crawford Arms pub at Red Rock -it's a disgrace to be left like that.

I'm still a little confused Barrie, this site doesn't look like the bridge site down the hill from Arley Hall. However the photo you uploaded #33617 does. Was this not the bridge near the Aberdeen Canal Bridge I mentioned before?
