The farm buildings beside the farmhouse include some bits of the old Meadow Pit - and the shafts are there too.
Meadow Pit was owned by the Wigan Coal and Iron Company, and was where one of 19 War Memorial plaques erected by the Company after WW1 was sited. Unfortunately it is one of two which have been lost.

Rev Long Could You enlighten Me as to where this is .

Some 30 odd years ago I can remember going to the house on Toddington Lane named Sea View and looking through the front bedroom windows and all that could be seen were fields and trees, though the owner and I conceded that maybe when the house was built part of the sea may well have been seen at certain times of the year glinting in the rays of the setting sun.

You can sometimes see the sea from the top of Dark Lane , Blackrod. The name Sea View would make sense.

You can see Blackpool Tower from there on a clear day Cyril, in fact, if you go a little further down Riley Lane, you can see the Tower from the side of the road.

You can see Winter Hill Mast from Stoke on Trent.

Can you see MOW COP from Winter Hill?

Comment by: Philip C on 9th March 2022 at 16:29

In addition to seeing Blackpool Tower when driving back to Red Rock you can also see what was called the Pepsi Max. There’s more. From Rivington Pike I ve seen ships on the sea against the sunset. Apologies that this is out of area.

That's good to know DTease and Philip. A spectacular and panoramic view of the coastline from Ainsdale up to Blackpool can; albeit on a clear day, be seen from the bench just after the church on Church Lane Wrightington.

Don't know about Mow Cop Scaramouche, but you can bet you'll be able to see Mick's house.

Scaramouche, if you can see Winter Hill Mast from Mow Cop, it follows that you could see Mow Cop from the top of Winter Hill Mast. On a good day, reet.

Once on a ramble up Rivington Pike on a very clear frosty morning and seeing the views you mention Philip, someone also pointed out the large natural gas terminal at Morecambe Bay glinting in the sun, so another good viewpoint of the west coast.

I once heard that they were going to take down Winter Hill but people objected because it was such a landmark. Any comments on this ?

Comment by: James Hanson on 9th March 2022 at 23:59

How on Earth could Winter Hill be "taken down"?
But, if they could, you'd be able to see Blackburn from Blackrod, probably.

A big angle grinder is all you need. Watch your head

It's a wonderful sight to be sure watching the sun go down at the highest point at Rivington. You can see the sun glinting on the sea in all its splendour.

I once saw Big Bertha round the back of their shed….just saying.

Comment by: George (Hindley) on 10th March 2022 at 20:02

It's a better view from Winter Hill, Veronica,

Comment by: Scaramouche on 10th March 2022 at 21:33

James, you never mentioned MOW COP you said STOKE ON TRENT??? How about Beeston Castle?

Comment by: Philip C on 13th March 2022 at 10:04

Saw the Lake District as I drove down towards Red Rock yesterday.
It’s not a straightforward question as people won’t agree to the definition of the Wigan area but what is the furthest point people have seen? …….no comments about the Milky Way

I can see the tops of the Welsh Mountains Philip in W/H so they could be seen from Wigan I'm sure.

Veronica, Westhoughton is much higher than Wigan so it's obvious that you can see further from there.

What was the building bottom left that seems to have a moat round it near Haighlands ?

Comment by: Veronica on 13th March 2022 at 14:11

If you say so George - If I mention other steep areas i.e. Ashurst Beacon maybe, you would only say it's not Wigan! Then that gets the ball rolling!

WN1 Standisher If you Google Haighlands Wigan you can find references to it under “historic England “ sites
