An early Wigan map showing the location of Cooper’s Row and the Empire Palace (Cinema). Hope this clarifies any earlier confusion. As a young boy in the 1950’s I ‘knew’ Dick Barnes, who lived in Kirkless Street, Scholes, he was the manager of the Empire. To verify Cooper’s Row (and the Wiend) on an 1864 map visit

It's very clear on the map how the Wiend opened out into Millgate ,it was a good short cut if going shopping down Market St. coming from Scholes. Wherever you needed to go in the Town Centre there was loads of 'short cuts'. A good way of avoiding all the crowds as well especially on a Saturday. It's hard to believe how packed it was with people jostling on the pavements. To me it was exciting going 'up Wigan' on Saturday, with spending money after being paid on Friday. Weekly wages then not at the end of the month like now.
