Any suggestions where the Wiend came out on Millgate? The left hand dot or the i in Millgate?
Looking more closely it has to be the letter I in Millgate
Definitely near the dot The Wend starts at the R in Market. Opposite the M would eventually become Library St.
Talking of Library St. You can take photos of the upper floors along Library St.and people don’t recognise it as Wigan. Which says a lot. Saw the Queen Mother there but I can’t think when. No she wasn’t catching a bus to Newsprings before someone adds that.
I think that The Wiend came out to Millgate where the 2nd dot above
the letter M is, just to the right of where that dreadful looking statue
is nowadays. What does the statue represent ?, I have to walk past it
when going to The Life Centre.
Assuming that the Wiend had the same footprint at the point where it opens out stood Ezra Sidebottom (printers), Tickles ( hardware and much more),Crawford’s wool shop and a fishing tackle/pet shop Ashcroft s?
Crawford's Wool shop wasn't in the Wiend Philip. I went to Crawford's Wool Shop many, many times. The building is still there . It's down another cobbled passage where if you carry on walking past it will bring you to the side entrance of Wallpaper Supplies. It was my favourite Wool shop of all of them in Wigan. I was always knitting for my children and grandchildren. Ps for what it's worth I'm for the left dot.
( I think!) The Wiend did come out on Millgate. It still does.
Philip C, you could have seen the Queen Mother in 1959 when she was in town visiting the Heinz factory at Kitt Green shortly after it opened.
There but for the 'grace of God I could have ended up at Heinz. A lot of girls in my class at school went there in 1961. In the end I chose sewing - it's was handier to me later on, although I only did machining for a couple of years. I don't think I would have enjoyed pickling Standisher - or the dreadful Beans Dept. !
WN1 Standisher. When the Queen Mother was on her way to Hienz factory. I had the duty position, at Seven Star’s Bridge. It was in the year 1959.
Ray as I've said before, the ugly face and empty head, to me , represents 'down in the doldrums'. I'm sure there's an ocean or sea named similar.
Veronica . Thank you for pointing that out.......My sister has also corrected me. I wish I could also be mistaken about that ridiculous face that sits up there.4x7zx
You had a lucky escape there Veronica in not going to Heinz, I once did a stint at seasonal work there for two to three months and was glad when I left. Some years later when at the council I had at times to do work at the Bleachworks, at first I wondered where I'd seen a similar looking workforce - and it was at Heinz, they all had pasty looking skin and had a distant look in their eyes with being shut in a factory doing the same repetitive work all day and with no sunlight.
It must have been the smell of the bleach Cyril. I must admit I do like the smell for a short time after cleaning the bathroom. They must have been 'way out' man smelling it all day long. ;~)
Thank you for your comment regarding the statue Veronica, It is
so ugly, He is not pretty like me and thee. Cheers, Ray.
