Wigan Album

I remember one like it at the bottom of Higham St in Scholes. It always looked dark and forbidding as if they were hiding something! I never saw anybody going inside... another one at the top of Cambridge St as well but not quite as dark looking as the one above. This was in the fifties, I used to go for a jug of ale sometimes for my mam and dad, maybe they shouldn't have served children.... must admit the outdoor licences always looked very clean looking.

Was the Oldfield Brewery in Millgate?. I remember a Wigan Borough Police detective, Fred Manley, acting on information received, many years ago, arresting a chap, about 5am, rolling a barrel of beer, out of a brewery in Millgate.

Ron, according to the list of Oldfield Brewery pubs and off licences, there was an off licence of theirs at number 85 Frog Lane.

Cyril, thanks for the link. Oldfields certainly owned some of the most well-known Wigan pubs.
Albert, The Oldfield brewery was in Poolstock. Just a little bit further up Poolstock towards Wigan than the labour club and its various successors. There are now modern houses on the site.

What was the name of the brewery in Millgate?. The name of the detective that I mentioned was George Manley, not Fred.

Moor fields was the Brewery on millgate, Behind the Green curtain,
Oldfieds Brewery was were Thompsons food supplies was. Next to the then New Poolstock Labour club.

Thank you cindy. When did these breweries cease production. At one time there were some really tip top beers, and ales produced. I always enjoyed Almonds, of Standish. A lovely nutty taste. White Horse, Standishgate.

Albert Almonds was indeed delicious but it had a reputation for deteriorating the further away from the brewery you went. The Boars Head had a very good pint.

They used to sell Moorfields beers in the Bodega on King St. I should say tried hard to sell it!! No-one would willing ly drink it a second time.

john ; correct , the brewery became thompsons wholesale warehouse ,growing up in poolstock in the 50s&60s we still called it the brewery. one of the streets in old poolstock was oldfield street
