Easter Sunday 1967, afternoon walk from Standish to Rivington Pike via Red Rock and various footpaths. Back to Horwich road & caught a bus to Chorley then the 259 bus back to Standish. Weather was sunny & mild for the time of year. Many changes are noted since then including no access for normal motor vehicles. Hunted this photograph out from my album to compare a view taken 15-09-2021. ( if allowed, will upload that one as comparison for future Wigan generations to view.)

Thank you Barrie for this photo. Its brought back, a million lovely memories for me.We spent all our courting day's up Rivington, and after we were married we've been up every weekend, hail, rain and snow, we have walked up to the pike with a baby, pram and big black Labrador. When we went in the Barn, they only sold pasties pies, and sausage rolls, there was no bar in, now you can get a drink, plus Sunday Lunch.

We all used to walk it up to the pike and back on Good Friday. It was a ritual for locals from the surrounding areas, and somewhere up there is a tree with Peter's and my initials on....PR and IG....I am not going back to try to find it! If the Good Friday walk still happens, the young people of today probably go in cars and just walk the last bit up to the pike but we walked from Hindley.

I remember the crowds walking in file through Westhoughton to climb the Pike on Good Friday. Not seen that for many a year...

Can remember walking it up to Rivington Pike with loads of schoolfriends from Hindley. We had eaten our packed lunches by the time we got to Scot Lane in Aspull. There was always a big crowd walking up there in the 1960's.

Good Friday on the 6 March. Easter of 1967 must have been on the earliest date ever, surely.

My humble apologies folks, typed in the wrong date, should be 26-03-1967 (Easter Sunday). Glad to read the memories this photo brings to you. Nowadays folks use their smart phones to take the photo, upload to Google maps or other sources and possibly forget about the trip later.

My earliest memory going to Rivington Pike was with St.Peters Sunday school Hindley in the 50's We caught a bus to Bolton and then another to Belmont and walked across to the Chinese gardens and up to the Pike. The teacher who took us was Frank Leonard or Lennard and he was a great bloke.Been up there many times since, walked, cycled, bus and car and still love the place. Many happy memories.
