Looks like the woman in front of the shop is holding a little boy wearing a dress.Apparently it was the norm then.
Thats correct Elizabeth. Boys wore dress like outfits till they were 3 or 4 years old, when they were dressed in short trousers. This was known as breeching, and family and relations would often mark the event by putting a small amount of money or a gift in the pockests of the new trousers.
This was probably where Ada Cartmells sweet shop was or Doris’s shop opposite Crooke Hall Inn
I think the shop was run by the Witters, Crooke was a dangerous place for strangers then.
Pleased to see a reference to the Witters of Crooke as my 3g-grandmother, Catherine (Kitty) Gore was nee Witter. I;d welcome more information if there's any available. Where was the post office in relation to Woosnams' grocers? (I think the latter was near the coal tippler next to the canal.)
