Went through Lower Ince, Platt Bridge, Bickershaw, Tamar, West Leigh before terminating in Leigh town centre.

This 54 service through Bickershaw used to take about 25 mins from Wigan to Leigh when I used it regularly in the late 50s. I always remember the fare was 1s/4d. or seven and a half new pence. I drove to Leigh mid afternoon a couple of weeks ago using the same route and it took me 55 mins. No road works or accidents' just traffic congestion.

This Lancashire United bus is one of three Alexander bodied AEC Swifts, 291-293 NTC108-110G new in 1968. By 1973 they had been withdrawn early and operated with St Helens Corporation. St Helens had 72 AEC Swift single deckers new 1968-75, RDJ215-223F, TDJ224-232G, XDJ233-241H, EDJ242-259J, JDJ260-268K, PDJ269-277L, and the last nine GEM598-606N were delivered in green Merseyside PTE livery.
