A detail from the photograph of the church's interior - showing the extremely elaborate memorial - a brass plaque in the centre, with a carved soldier on either side - and an extravagantly-carved surround.
The brass tablet survives alongside two of similar design made for WW2 - but the rest has gone. Was it left in the old church when they moved into the new one in 1961, and was then lost in a fire which followed some time later - does anyone know?

It doesn't bear thinking about if all the beautiful carving was lost to fire. I have never seen such an elaborate work of art in a church commemorating both wars. Usually you see plaques in old churches and nothing at all in new churches. I know of one priest who objected to some of the veterans wearing their medals!!! For some reason he thought it was 'glorifying' the war! Glad to say they ignored him.
