This is already on the site under Scholes. Keith Bowen has just enhanced it and so I thought I would put it on under Greenough Street where I should have put the original photo.

I haven't see it before....wonderful! This must bring back so many memories for the people who knew the area.

I put a message on the original photo a few years ago. I am sure that lady was a teacher at St Pats by the name of Miss Holland. She came from Standish so would have walked up Greenough St to get to the school.

The shoe shop was taken over by the Isherwood family . Lawrence ( of artist fame ) ran this one , he would display his painting in the windows .
I rember he once had a portrait of Princess Margaret topless , that caused a commotion I can tell you !

Ooooh I never saw that one Tom and I always walked down Greenough St on Saturdays! I remember the old woman in a shawl and I think there was a painting of a pitman' in the window alongside the dust and cobwebs. I do remember Mittons chip shop and Leneghans across the road and Dr Johnson's surgery.

We used to live just around the corner on Warrington Lane, but well after this shop was there, wish I had lived there and know what I know now re-the price that his paintings are now bringing..I have one of his prints, but that's all it is..a print.his Brother Gordon had the shoe shop in Wallgate and was the nicest man you could hope to meet.

Maureen. Gordon's son Clive had the shoe shop on Darlington Street East. I was at school with him in the 1960's. Another great bloke !

Interesting to see the name "Leyland" Est 1887 on the photo. In 1939 at 151 Wigan Lane, we have a Sarah C Leyland aged 72 in the same household as Gordon L Isherwood aged 20, a Shoemaker, also Harry L Isherwood (B.1887 )married and a Shoemaker & shop manager. Lily Isherwood, (B.1892) Harry's wife and James L Isherwood, aged 22, General Clerk seeking work - the home is described as the "Leyland Household" so Sarah is the householder and a widow.
