Just prior to closing down, how many Wiganers have bought their furniture to set up their new home from this shop? Thousands no doubt!!

I got my first three piece suite from here- it was a tan coloured leatherette with tweed cushions. Very modern at the time - not nice now when I think about it- taste becomes a bit more refined the older you get. I always liked browsing in Penningtons it was full of character besides furniture! You walked downhill to the bottom end - it was what you'd term higgledy piggledy!

Back in 1969 when my wife and myself were setting up our first home together we bought some of our furniture from here, I remember going upstairs along narrow corridors that would meander along - very creaky floorboards as well. As Veronica says, you tumbled down hill at the far end of the warehouse, spooky too !.

But oh! what character it had, JJP, Maureen and Veronica.....spookiness and all! We have lost so much in the name of progress.

There was always a couple of men in brown coats hovering about, just in case you needed help....it was another world. I had forgotten about the creaky floorboards! :o ))

Always liked this shop and my mum bought some bedroom furniture from here. I read in the Wigan Museum that the small figure above the door of Pennington's house(next door) was put there to remember their little girl who had sadly drowned in the River Douglas. Don't know what the plans are for this building but there seems to have been scaffolding there for a long time.
