This shop would have been on the left if you were going away from Wigan and just before the canal at Rose Bridge.
There is a house on the other side of the bridge which is number 111.
Definitely one for Irene this. On her home turf as well.
Its been on before this picture a few weeks ago.
Would love to have had a look in there. It makes you wonder where he had room to sell papers.
How well you know me, Alan H! And what I would give to walk in that shop! x.
Stephen Nathan. Grocery and Provision Dealer. (Info from Ince directory)
Its nearly 50 years since I lived in Wigan off Darlington St East, but I am sure I have memories (perhaps false ones) of a cafe /ice cream shop in the 1950s/60s just before the Rose Bridge canal Bridge. Was it this shop in later years or do I have Old Timers Disease again ? My Grandmother lived in Albert Street very near here so I was around this area quite often.
My late brother remembered the ice-cream shop/café. It was Sivori's.
Irene. Thanks and to your brother. That was the one. Glad my memory still works !!
On the other picture it says the man's name is Tom Scholes outside his shop. It was sent in by Helen Ashton in September. Just thought I would look it up.
Correct Vb, page 9, pic no6.
I don't forget the pictures of old Wigan Jonno - not that I'm complaining mind!
It could be old Arkwright stood there musing about Nurse Gladys! Similar build to him anyway.....perhaps wondering where he could find a ladder! Many of those shops were still in evidence in the 50s and 60s. I would imagine my grt grandmother might have gone in there as she lived in Caroline St nearby.
I often visited the shop during the war and remember Mrs Scholes well.My aunt Maud did her shopping there.Nearer the Bridge was Mrs Kingham's secondhand bookshop & Lending library
A treasure trove for a voracious reader.
was the ice cream shop on rose bridge not called rizzanos, dont know, could be wrong, the name came to mind when i thought of it.i first heard elvis singing wooden heart there on the juke box they had.
How exciting to find this photo. I'm researching my family history, most of which hails from Wigan. I discovered my 3x great grandparents Alexander and Eve Wigan lived at 111 Manchester Rd, Ince, so just down the road from this shop. Streetview shows 111 is still there today. So amazing so see where they lived. If anyone has any info / photos / memories of relatives to the Wigan, Wilding or Brown families I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
This picture is of Tom Scholes outside his shop at 105 Manchester Road. He took it over from his father in law, Nathan Stephen.
