You are actually looking at the exit tunnel there, Ron.

Jarvo, it is the entrance tunnel if you are entering the station from Manchester.

I thought if you entered from Manchester, you would enter the station via the tunnel on the left hand side which is not in the photo?

Yip from Ince station you ARE entering Wallgate station. If your leaving Wallgate tunnel then your on your way to Ince, Hindley and so on.

DerekB: It isn't. Look at the line crossing to the left of the picture. That will go under the station entrance (not in the picture)and will go either to Liverpool or Southport. The tunnel that you see in the picture, is the exit; this will go to all stations to either Manchester or Bolton. You may be getting confused as both tunnels were double tracked in steam days.

You are quite right Jarvo. I had forgotten there was a separate tunnel for each main platform.

Jarvo is correct. I travelled to Bolton 5 days a week for 5 years from here, and the tunnel in view was the exit tunnel.
