Took me a bit of time to get orientated..., but I think that's Taylors Lane bridge to the right - with the pylons of the WCML just visible leading up to it from the left. The buildings towards the foreground, and where the crane is working, are part of the Moss Pits complex. Unless I'm completely wrong....

Spot on rev
The bridge is Taylor's lane bridge
Nice to see the view from there

Don't think its Taylor's lane bridge to the right? Think about the power station, gasometer and wigan center to very right and taylors lane way off screen to the very left.

I agree!

Looks like the view from Fosters playing fields looking towards Wigan town centre. The white pathway follows part of the old Central railway line. The large building to the left is the council yard on Sovereign Road

Take a look at Terry's pic of the cap on one of the Ince Moss pit shafts, a couple of pages back - Item #: 24691. It shows the power station from more or less the same angle - so I'd surmise that this was taken a bit further South.
The bridge carrying the line into Central Station went well before this pic was taken - so the white tracks can't be leading up to that. I have a pic of the canal taken in 1974 with the bridge abutments still there - so I guess the bridge went in the 60s. There's no other bridge with brick abutments as seen here anywhere need Fosters. I must admit that I initially thought we were in that area - the long, low building to the left of the bridge looking a bit like part of Heaton's Bakery building beside the canal - but then, the tall main building behind it is missing.

Terry's latest pics, particularly the one with the canal lock behind the pit shaft cap, seem to settle the issue - it's not Ince Moss - it is near Fosters.
Excuse me whilst I brush the bits of humble pie out of my beard....

How can a scarcer tell a Wiganer about Wigan.
