Jondav, why would anyone comment on a photo like this
History john,
Because this ia picture of old Bryn which has now long gone.
It`s a good job there`s photos like this to remind us what things used to look like
Are these not the old Cottages that were at the top end of Bryn rd.. My first husbands cousin lived in one, before they were demolished..
I think these houses are where the furniture shop on wigan rd is now becauce the council was going to make a car park on this land
If you look carefully you will see there are two rows of houses in the photo and they appear to be on a hill which suggests to me they are on Bryn Rd, opposite the Masonic hall where there used to be four rows of back to back terraced houses at one time.
David, those are the cottages I was talking about...
David, Are you thinking of Whithill Street?
I regularly purchased timber from Sherman's wood yard, which was located there. I have been in those cottages, on many occasions, and I do not recall them being 'back to backs'!
However, the terrace in the photograph, is clearly NOT a 'back to back'.
The rear wall of the former co-op premises, was topped with broken glass (climb-over deterrent), which is consistent with the photograph. Also the angle evident on the ridge of the roof, would not be apparent on Whithill Street's terraces, but the coop did have an angle built into it.
if this is the co-op why would it need so many chimney stacks,if you look on photos that show the front of the co-op it is curved.
Hello gp. If you look at the first photo under Bryn, in places section of album, which is co-op from the front, it does have numerous chimneys. I guess it was built as ordinary terraced housing, and then adapted into use for retail activity. Also, think the orange colour to the right of building in this photo, is the hardware shop (later fishing) on Bryn Road, just a little down from Sam Green's shop.
apologies: that should have read 'to the LEFT'!
Hi - I am looking for Hope Cottages (possibly on Wigan Road) Bryn do you have any idea where these might of been? Thanks in anticipation.
