Remember Morton's Irene? Very well known Grocer's, especially in Wigan, and district. Very nostalgic being reminded of shops long since gone, such as Rushton's, Maypole, and several other well known names. Is this the Manchester Road end of Ince Green Lane?

My brother Peter used to deliver groceries for Mortons at Platt Bridge on a grocers bike with a basket on the front,I wish I had some pictures to show his kids.

I have published this photo on here before, no harm in it being shown again, the shop to the left with the canopy was originally Rushton's, and just beyond it was the White House pub, now Royce's gym, in the middle of the shot behind the lamp is The Squirrel now back to the original name, Morton's became Jack Postlethwaite's, amongst others, its still there, but like all our old places now a convenience store, to the right was the old smithy green, not amongst other places a KFC, they built us a nice library then shut it, its what was referred to as progress

Morton's had quite a few shops in the area, there was one down Ince Green lane, where it split to form Manley street, another was over Rose Bridge, which was later sold and became Cheethams, I took orders for the one facing Belle Green lane on Saturdays, One I took was in west street, (I forget the name ) but she had he front basket full to the brim, half the time I walked pushing the bike, but it was good coming back, especially with a big tip in my pocket,

Albert, I certainly do remember Morton's, and Postlethwaite's butchers across the road which had sawdust on the floor and, if you weren't careful, you collided with enormous sides of beef which hung from the ceiling! I love traditional Butcher's shops, sadly few and far between these days, as are Hardware shops, but they do still exist.
