You're welcome,Ron,I wnder if Mr Isherwood took photos to get ideas for later sketches and paintings,in any case it's a pleasure to assist in saving a little bit of old Wigan.
Hi Dave yes a lot of photographs had bits of paint on them as if he was getting some ideas. I removed the paint and cleaned them up a bit before putting them on the site.
Where did School Street run from and to?
It Ran from Greenough street to school Lane.
gorgeous
School Street is still there, its the road Central Day Centre, Sam's Bar and the Oak Hotel are on
Nothe Oak and Sams bar on Orchard St. School Street became Morris St, Upper morris St ran down from Scholes. Both known now as Morris St.
I was born in School St and spent my childhood there in the 1930/40's.Consequently,I think this photograph is Lime St, not School St.The two streets were next to each other with Lime St. being nearer to Scholes. There was no bend in School St.(see the photo taken in 1901).The space on the left towards the back of the photo was known as The Big Yard.Air Raid shelters were dug under the Big Yard and I spent many uncomfortable (but exciting) nights down there. The tall chimney in the distance (now demolished)was the old Wigan Technical College in Library St;now the Town Hall. This chimney could not be seen from School St.Looking down School St.,you looked directly at the end of Wigan Central Station.
