an old advert for the baths, no mention of swimming though! dated on the back may 1927. it has the only view of the front of the building i have seen.

The baths that I remember had a different edifice from this one ,does this mean that the present pool is the forth on the same site or is my memory playing tricks ?,I recall it being directly on to Millgate ,no railings or gates.

I think that the top left view shows the front of the baths ( main entrance )is on Hewlett St? Not onto Millgate. I could be mistaken on Hewlett St, but definately not onto Millgate.

where's Spooner?

Comment by: Dave Marsh on 12th May 2012 at 13:45

Mr Spooner became caretaker at Thomas Linacre and did a good job without any confrontations. He did chuck us out the pool once or twice for jumping from the balcony.

the caption of the top left view is 'college avenue entrance'. i forgot to say the advert is on a postcard.

Think you might have the wrong Spooner there Dave.He went on to Tyldesley Baths after the new Wigan Pool opening in 1966 from where he eventually retired. He'd been at Wigan for at least15 years before that, long before the Linacre was built. I was at WGS from '62 -'69 during the period when it amalgamated with the Linacre, I can assure you he wasn't there.
