The Georgian house just below the fanlight there is the image of a yong girl, I have always been told she lived in the house. and drowned when she was playing near the river Douglas when it was being diverted. Her family put the carving there as a memorial to her. This building has preservation order on it, thanks to Avril Fishwick, otherwise the bulldozers would have had another piece of our heritage
that is true tom, the dougie used to run through the rear before they diverted it, the cherub is still there today.
Certainly true about the Douglas, but I think the drowning story might be a myth. Decorative sculptures of Cherubs or 'Putti' were extremely common on architecture of this period.
One of the older buildings in St Helens town centre has several, almost identical to this one on door and window lintels, and I have seen them in many other locations.
