A couple of pics of Belle Green Lane in 1961: devoid of traffic. I have five minutes or so of this film, marred only by the presence of a local urchin running his little legs off up and down the flags and dragging a red, toy fire engine tied to a toy phone.

In the background, which is more interesting, Ernie’s shop can be seen and there is a regular flow of kids running in and out as well as two girls playing on either side of the road with the wheel-set taken from an old pram and collecting twigs and bushes to play with in the road. A little girl appears from the shop with a brush at one stage and proceeds to sweep Ernie’s flags into the road. She looks to be about seven. During this entire sequence – some of which has been edited out, so let’s say fifteen minutes of real time and I can’t run for longer than that anyway – not a single car or bus passes up or down the lane. There is more danger of getting knocked over by a stray dog than anything else.

The wired railings in the left distance are blocking off the area of the slaggie towards Rose Bridge Colliery and the, recently removed, Springs Branch line crossing and box. It is from there that the two girls are collecting bushes so it wasn’t that much of a fence anyway. I do remember bits of the fence still being in place a few years later when I went to Belle Green School.

Most notably, all of these kids are playing free int main road and, as well as there being no cars around, there are no grown-ups about either.

It was another world, another time,dk. I wish my grandchildren, Edie and Oliver, had this freedom.

Halsall, you’ll have me skriking in a minute. These old pics and films are precious but they are next to useless in their boxes. They were always only taken to be viewed later on so we have Brian’s splendid show to thank for that. I have had a lot of very kind comments aimed towards these pictures for which I am glad, and it’s clear that they have kindled some good memories for quite a few folk. I started doing this in February 2008 – where does the time go? It hasn’t been any trouble; on the contrary, nothing but a pleasure. And, along with the other remarks and interest, this one of yours, from the heart, makes the process all worthwhile. I appreciate it.

It’s a nice place to visit – the past. It’s a nice place to have a week’s holiday in, even – if you’re trying to remember a little tale. But, you can’t live there. Without everyone’s old pictures and reminders of days gone by, we might start to forget the lessons we learned on our Grandma’s and Grandad’s knee and forget to pass it on to our own. And, that would be a real shame.

dk, my email is playing up today, so just in case you haven't received the one I've sent you, the dvd played perfectly all the way through on our dvd player via the telly! So I have seen it at last. Brenda's played on her computer but not the telly, and yet it played on her relative's telly! Thankyou so much for these beautiful memories;I may never get presented with the Big Red Book, but when I watch the film and see these wonderful photos I think "Irene Roberts, This is Your Life".

Hi DK
Lovely to see this picture.I lived in the row across from Ernies shop at the top end next to Joe Moss's shop from 1950 until 1971 when I got married. Next to Ernies lived my schoolgirl friend Cynthia Halliwell and across from Ernies lived Jinny and Joe Hoctor with their children Susan, Colin, Robert and Catherine and next to them lived the Miller family and then Cilla and Arthur Sheppard with their daughter Susan who was my best friend. My family were very involved in Belle Green Mission and I have many many fond memories of Church, walkingdays and the Reunions we used to have there. I would love to purchase one of your cds/disc how do I go about purchasing one off you
