This was at the top of Belle Green Lane up the fields near the Black tank it was on top of a hill near to the Devils tunnel. the "Wutchie" is in the background

I remember it well. I was always playing around there. If I'd gone missing, me mam always knew where to find me!
Does anyone remember the time the army went to that area with tanks and other vehicles? I think they used it for target practice of some kind.
The year would be around 1958.

my god this brings back memories i remember playing in there. we used to play army an catch frogs they used be flooded with water.great times.thanks for sharing photo

The black tanks long gone...but does this still remain. Not been up there for donkeys years, I think it was part of the Iron and coal works among others.

yea remember it very well,spent hours up there,it was on whats locally known as the grassy brew,the background looks so much nicer without the tip bein there

Bill...You've jogged my memory about the army. I do remember them going onto the land at the top of Belle Green Lane. It was something to do with training and testing equipment. The tank transporters couldn't get under the low bridge so they had to take them off in Battersby Street. There was jeeps and a couple of big guns of some kind. They cordoned off the area for safety. I don't remember any explosions though, but I could be wrong. I wonder if anyone took some photo's?
