I remember the shop...wasn't it Meeson's at one time? They sold me an empty Quality Street tin in the late 1960s; we had made christmas cakes in Domestic Science at school and had to have a tin to keep it in during the various stages of marzipan, icing etc, then to carry it home in.

Why didn't you just buy a tin of quality streets? that way, you can enjoy the sweets and keep the tin.

Hello John, the tin cost me 2/6d... I imagine full of Quality Street it would have been much more, but I can see your point! The thing is, I'm not a sweet tooth and never have been Unfortunately, I still eat all the wrong and fattening stuff, but SAVOURY....chips, pies, crisps etc. A nd all these years on, I can recall I never tasted the christmas cake, but my family enjoyed it! Thanks for replying. Irene.

Sorry if this answer appears twice....think I copied the verification code wrongly. Thanks for your reply John, and I take your point, but I am not a sweet tooth, preferring savoury (but still fattening!) stuff like pies and chips. The tin cost 2/6d but would have been much more filled with sweets, I imagine. I didn't even taste the christmas cake, but my family enjoyed it! Thanks for your reply. Irene.

I remember the man in the photo from a shop on King Street, I took my father's electric shaver to there for repair in the late 1960s I think it was, I can't remember the exact name of the shop except it said razor centre in the window, maybe it belonged to Corletts.

I would use The Chocolate Box in Mesnes Street later in the early 1970s as I worked on that street, I would buy cigarettes etc., and chocolates at Christmas, but I was told the man in there at the time also had a shoe shop in town at one time, and later when I attended Wigan college evening classes I did see him a few times on Parsons Walk where he lived, though I can't recall his name.
