The 'BIG LAMP' at the Birkett Bank end of Hardybutts was one of three large gas lamps which illuminated the winding course of Hardybutts. Each was set in the roadway on a stone base to protect it from the wheels of passing traffic. This lamp, stood at the intersection of Wellington St. and Cambridge St. The building is the "Wigan Arms" on the corner of Wellington St.
Another lamp, was at the junction with Warrington Lane.

I bet them Pub doors could tell an interesting tale or two if they could talk.

I remember this lamp vaguely as a small child in the early fifties. I lived in John St. I also recall old men sitting on the base of it - chatting and passing the time of day. I dont remember when it was removed.

Does anyone remember the name of the pub?

This can't be the one at the top of Birkett Bank [outside the Birkett Hotel]. I lived in Birkett Bank and was told that this lamp post was taken out by a bomb from Zeppelin l61 on April 12 1918 in WW1. There is a map showing this on WiganWorld.

The pub was called the Wigan Arms and was run by the McKeenan family. Oppersite was another pub called The Prince of Wales. There were four streets intersected at this junction: Hardybutts, Wellington St, John St and Cambridge St. We lived in John St.

Hi Norman, like you I lived in Birkett Bank (1950 to 1956) and was also told that it was blown up by a bomb dropped by the Zeppelin in April 12th 1918 so if this photo is from 1920's it certainly isn't the one that used to be at the top of Birkett Bank, which was never replaced, however, it might have been very similar. My friend at the time was Harold Bibby, are you one of his elder brothers?

The shop next to the Wigan Arms looking down Wellington St., was Mrs., Lynch's home cooked meats. The last Landlord and Landlady of the"Wigan"were Luke and Agnes Mc Donall ,Agnes maiden name was Mc Kiernan, she was brought up in nearby John St ., Luke hailed from Co., Mayo Ireland,a really nice couple. I went school with there son Kevin R.I.P.
