I bought once a jacket from a shop called Harry Jones and I remember the label inside said Harry Jones of Wigan.

I worked, early sixties, in the Solicitors, Taylor Bridge Baron and Sykes, I think it was. The entrance was just in the Weind on the right and up the stairs. Brings back memories this picture.

Were the offices of the Wigan Observer in the Wiend years ago? I'm talking of the late 1940's.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 24th March 2009 at 12:05

No The Wigan Observer Offices where in Rowbottom Square. In the building facing you as you walk in via Wallgate.

Comment by: Mick on 24th March 2009 at 22:47

Are you thinking of Rowbotham's printers that used to be across the top of the Weind Helen?

Comment by: Mick on 25th March 2009 at 11:33

Correction - the printers were Sidebotham's.

Thanks Mick, I think you may have solved a mystery for me.
I remember going as a child with my Grandfather Bryson to an office in The Wiend. I would sit on a high stool while he talked to a man. I always thought it may have been the Observer office...why? You saying there was a printers up there, Sidebothams, sounds about right as I have only found out in the last year my grandfather wrote technical books on mining, so perhaps we were in the printers office ? Last summer I was walking past a second hand book shop in nearby Cromer...along way from Wigan...& saw a book in the window by Thomas Bryson, The Mechanics of Mining. I will take a pic of it & post it on the WW album.

Barbara, Taylors Bridge was down the alley where the Empire cinema was. The cobblers shop was at the top where John Bull was afterwards. I worked there as well in fifties.

Barbara, are you by any chance Barbara Kent as was.

Hi Helen. If you go to the 'Weind' photos in the 'Places' section of this album, the photo of Lets Wine Bar may jog your memory!

My mate and I used to buy moulding powder, moulds, plaques etc at Tickles for our hobby.
Barbara, the side entrance to Taylors Bridge Baron & Sykes was in Old King's Head Chambers. I worked there also from 1962-1964. You're right about the cobblers being at the end though.

Sorry, it was c.cunningham who mentioned the cobblers. There's mention of Taylors Bridge in "memories" by the way.

Just getting my stuff ready for our Christmas Do , and I noticed that my overcoat has "Harry Jones Wigan" inside.

Weighs a ton in comparison to modern cold weather gear, but it is still in cracking nick.

James Lowe Cameras was on the left hand side. James Lowe was my Dad. I used to love visiting the dark room in the cellars and watching the photo's being developed.

My grandfather was Harry Jones. Sadly he died before I was born but my dad had his suits made there and I really loved visiting there as a child.
