Many thanks to Frank Orrell for the original photo....(I have a book of Frank's photos and they are absolutely brilliant!), and thankyou to Keith for the clever colourisation of all Wigan photos, which is always subtle and not "over-the-top".
I agree Irene, well done Keith...lovely ladies !
Looks like they ate as many pies as they sold!. An occupational hazard it suppose.
Thanks to Keith they look more tasty in colour, the pies not the ladies, although I am sure they are both quite delicious.
The lady on the left appears quite slim to me, Colin. Edna, (on the right), was a lady who was small in height, like me, (I am 5' 1"), and, believe me, every pound shows when you are small!. She was what we in Ince called "bonny", and oh! I could just eat a Cain's pie, and would enjoy every calorie! (and a buttered barm cake as well!).
Colin, I was told that when working in bakeries, pie or chip shops, it was the grease laden steamy air you were breathing in each and every day that piled on the pounds. I suppose that is as good an excuse as any, though not to mention the quality control taste tests.
Just noticed the invoice on the wall and from a Pickle Company, wonder if it was the local pickle factory that was around there, Irene will remember the name and where it was. I doubt it will be Pledges Pickles though, will it our Eli.
I doubt too that Si King will be making the pies with the similar machine he got for his restaurant, though I'm sure he'll be doing plenty quality control taste testing when he's there.

Cyril, the local pickle factory was T. E. Gallagher's. (known as TEG'S Pickles locally). My late brother Ronnie, (19 years my senior), used to attend the "Penny Rush" at the local "Doric Cinema", (known as "The Bug" for reasons we won't dwell on). The kids got in for a penny and an empty jam-jar, which the owner, a Mr. Pennington, (known to one and all as "Owd Penny"), sold back to the pickle works. Recycling isn't a modern conception!
Thanks Irene, it seems the pickles aren't from there, as there's a W in the name.
