For the uninitiated , this recovery vehicle is a Leyland Martian .

Manufactured at Farington primarily for the M.o.D. as a tank recovery tractor .

As It’s power source was a straight eight cylinder Rolls Royce petrol engine , the fuel consumption was horrendous , so consequently , it only ever left the yard as a last resort .

Driven by the late Freddie Mason , it dragged me , in an eight legger ERF with a burnt out clutch , up Bonk Brow hooked up to a broken down Shell petroleum artic tanker in 1980 .
No hesitation .

Is that Fred Mason from Bryn, who had a sister named Rosena?

If so, we were neighbours way back in childhood, if still alive, I guess he would be in his early seventies now.

Very sad to learn of his demise if that is the man.

That looks like a real Beast, wouldn't like to pay fuel bill.

Don’t know about a sister Strangeloop , but when Fred lived in Bryn in the 70s he lived in one of those terraced houses opposite the Bath Springs , long since demolished .

He would have been in his 70s when he died , but he was living down in the Folkestone area at that time .

I attended his funeral at holy trinity church in Downall Green along with Barry Greenall a few years ago .

It was only then that I learned that he came from somewhere in the north east originally and had spent a good number of years in the territorial army .

He was a decent lad and could turn his hand to pretty much anything .

In addition to being handy with the spanners he was also a decent welder and fabricator .

There’s a photo of him on the album that I put on a few years ago actually .
It’s under ‘assorted’ ‘car I wished I’d never seen ‘.

Unfortunately It’s taken with his back to the camera , so positive identification may be a problem . But it is Freddie Mason .

Thanks Ozy, yes that is the man.

The family moved to the Wigan Road location from Spennymoor, County Durham Circa 1960. The house was the former Mrs Cook's shop. There is a photo of it in the Bryn section of Album, where Fred has replied to a comment on the photo.

Pleased to read the positive comments which you have recorded about Fred
