Left-Right.......PC Joe Keegan, PW Mavis Duckett and PC John Lydon, with "Charlie" the puppet. These officers visited local schools to teach Cycling Proficiency. John Lydon was the father of Joe Lydon, the well-known Wigan Rugby Player. Around 1971.

Does not seem quite right to see them without the Wigan Coat of Arms portrayed in their lapels. Served with each them in the early sixties.

Does anyone remember a police officer who did road safety in school. Mr Pearson who had a puppet named “Tommy Caution”?

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 12th April 2022 at 20:29

Certainly not a job for a police officer. Police should be there to stop crime (of which there is, nowadays, more than they can handle).

Comment by: irene roberts on 13th April 2022 at 09:09

Apologies....the puppet's name WAS Tommy, not Charlie. We had a police officer teaching us road safety at Ince Cenral school and we used to call him "Bobby Beacon". Trust someone to make a negative remark about this lovely photo....we had more police officers in those days, and children were quite thrilled to have a policeman teaching them road safety and probably gave them more attention than they would have given their teacher.and it gave us respect for the police and let us see them as human beings.

Mr Hanson. There are also a lot of traffic accidents involving children, some of which prove fatal. What is worse than the death of a child?

Comment by: Edna on 13th April 2022 at 15:55

Why people have to make negative comments, is beyond me.Whats happened to "Be Kind"

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 13th April 2022 at 16:36

Why are people unable to read and comprehend?
I haven't made any 'negative' comment. I gave my opinion.
And, in my opinion, a police officer's job isn't teaching kids to ride bikes safely, just as much as it isn't a school teachers job to stop criminals.

Youve got it wrong james doing this was only part of there job ,pretty sure they caught the bad guys aswell

If it helped to save lives on the roads then it was money well spent and good police practice. It is now called Bikeability and run by the Department of Infrastructure. https://www.bikeability.org.uk/

Crossing roads safely and the wearing of seat belts in cars now by Wigan Council Education Road Safety Team, Lessons for Infants upwards. https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Business/Professionals/Road-safety-lessons-and-resources/Key-Stage-1.aspx

And yet despite these safety campaigns and rules and regulations there shall always be those who are selfishly opinionated, choosing to drive recklessly along roads and endangering or sadly ending other road users lives.

@ Hanson. I am sure the officers in question saved many lives from their dedication to the cause of teaching children road safety, and I take my hat off to them, WELL DONE OFFICERS!!!!

Comment by: Ena Malcup on 14th April 2022 at 16:59

Yes, I recall PC Pearson. Marvellous rapport with the kids.

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 14th April 2022 at 18:55

Gaz. It is, of course, possible that the officers in question saved many lives with their dedication to the cause of teaching children road safety, BUT, a police officer should not be doing that job.
Of course, SOMEBODY SHOULD. But not a police officer.

Ena Malcup, if PC Pearson held such marvellous rapport with the kids, he should have been a schoolteacher or a social worker rather than a police officer.

James they are road traffic police officers ,best men for learning children how keep safe on roads

I remember Joe Lydon and his lovely wife Nancy very well. Nancy became a Catholic in order to marry him and practised her religion faithfully ever after. They were parishioners at St Cuthbert's for many years. Joe had been a good friend of my father since before the war. Joe's parents were Joseph and Susannah Lydon and they lived at Cropper House Winstanley, where Joe and his brothers and sisters were brought up. He served in the Royal Navy during the war and joined Wigan Police shortly after he was demobbed. The Lydon family came originally from a tiny island called Glan on Lough Corrib in County Galway.

Mr Hanson. The police spend a considerable amount of time of every shift ,dealing with a whole variety of incidents SOMEBODY ELSE should be dealing with.

Comment by: Michael Gormally on 15th April 2022 at 03:02

I said "Joe" Lydon. Of course I should have said "John" Lydon or "Johnny", as I believe his family and friends called him.

Comment by: Veronica on 17th April 2022 at 10:59

When I was growing up the advice was to always 'ask a police man' - meaning if lost or just asking the time! Now its like seeing the first cuckoo in Spring... if I see one walking on a street I think "Goodness me is that a Bobby I see there or a mystical vision!" We don't seem to call them 'Bobbies' anymore either....

Malc. He must have been a Central Division when I was at Pemberton. Such a long time ago. Wouldn’t have left Wigan but for the writing being on the wall for the demise of Borough Forces.

I lived near Joe Keegan when I was a child at Beech Hill and lived near John Lydon in Pemberton when I was in the police.
