Standing: Teacher Miss Palmer who married that year and became Mrs Ratcliffe. Her wedding present from the school was a shiny new kettle. She kindly helped me through the horrors of being made to eat butter beans hidden in mashed potato by the school dinner ladies! Names I recollect are as follows, reading left to right: 1 ? 2 Denise?, 3 Jacqueline Cray, 4 Carol Brown (me), 5 ?, 6 Janet ?, 7 Carol ?, 8 ? Middle row standing: 1 ? 2 Brian Marsden, 3 Malcolm Fairhurst?, 4 David Chamberlain, 5 Peter ?, 6 ?, 7 ? Galloway, 8 Nicholas Granger, 9 ? Middle row seated: 1 ?, 2 Betty McCann, 3 Sheila ? 4 Mary Boardman, 5 Helen Cunliffe, 6 Susan Mawson (her mother taught the next class up), 7 ? 8 Gillian Cray (twin of Jackie). Front row: 1 Susan Richardson, 2 David Marr, 3 Mildred Holland, ?, ?
This was the year before mine, I think Andrew Simm was #9 middle row standing - keen rugby player in later life. Also here (though I can't spot him) should be Christopher Martindale, son of Grace who ran the chippy behind the Brocket Arms. I do remember Malcolm Fairhurst, bright lad, went to Oxford. To get to Mrs Mawson's class we had to go through the top class (Jean Noble's) room. One day I saw Malcolm's plasticine model of Santa's sleigh on the display table at the front, and in a fit of jealosy drastically altered its shape with my fist - for which I was soundly and deservedly walloped!
While searching through old pictures of school life I came across this pic "Reception class 52 and can help you put a surname to Peter but afraid I am the 4th lad standing and not marked as David Chamberlain I cannot help with any other names but moved from Wigan to Nottingham in approx 54/55
I remembered a few more names: L-R Back row standing: 2 Denise Gregson, 6 Janet Appleton, 7 Carol Harding/Hardman. Middle row standing: 5 Peter Hurst, 8 Nicholas Grange.
Two more names I found on the other photo of this class are: Middle row seated L-R 1 Carol Hitchen and 3 Sheila Roscoe.
See following names missing from my pic. Back row last two on right: Janet Appleton beside her on far end is Carol Hardman. Middle row seated: 1st left Carol Hitchen, 3rd left Sheila Roscoe.
Think the first child on the left seated is me Hilary Hinchliffe I lived in Coppull and travelled by bus. Philip my elder brother (born 1944) was 2 years older and attended the school, also my younger brother Andrew (born 1948). We all left in 1956 when we moved house.
