thank you great pic.
The photo is directly behind my bungalow, 2 school lane. Wich would be over the top of William Speakmans shoulder. I have lived in Roby Mill for 61 years and was unaware that there was ever a church to the left of the school. Do you know anything about that. There are also a lot of Speakmans in and around Roby Mill, my partner has relations called Speakmansand they are from Apply Bridge and her garndad's name was Hugh Speakman. Aiso Speakmans from Jonsons Farm in Lafford Lane, Roby Mill would be interested to know where your family originated from.
Just spoken to my sister (Sheila - nee Darbyshire) and she says that the building to the left of the school isn't a church. It's one of Jack Sixsmith's (very large) chicken sheds. I do recall (vaguely) several very large chicken sheds on there when I was a sprog.
Hi. I am very interested in your photograph as I am related to the Speakmans. My great-grandmother Alice Chisnall(born Dalton 1846) was the daughter of Richard Chisnall and Margaret(nee Speakman). They lived in Newgate Upholland in 1851 and Back Lane , Upholland in 1841.I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Lynne
So good to get a response, as my Speakman family history searches are stumbling. My mother Evelyn (Speakman) married Leslie Darbyshire from Bank Top, son of Tommy Darbyshire. I have complex "trees" for various Speakmans, one which has Margaret & Richard Chisnall on it. Margaret was a daughter of John Speakman & Alice (Rigby), and her brother Thomas married Richard's sister Margaret. On the photo, the man on the right is Bill Foster. William died in 1930, and Norman in 1954. I would really like to meet all of you and have a longer chat. Feel free to Email me asap.
The "Church" mentioned in the comments is actually part of the school. If you compare it against a photo of the school you will see this.
Hi. I am really hoping this is the Norman I am looking for. My great great grandfather left Norman a large sum of money when he died in 1954. His name was William Cooper (a Salvation Army officer) It say Norman was a green grocer. If I have the right Norman could you please email me chellec80@gmail.com I am looking for people who knew William. They were obviously close to leave such a amount of money to.
Hello,
May I ask if William Speakman married Martha Heyes?
Many thanks for your kind help.
Regards
Jacqueline
Hi Jacqueline,
I have a lot of detail re the Speakmans (my mother was Evelyn Speakman of Roby Mill, daughter of Norman and Esther (Smith) of Farley Lane). My info re the William, a son of James & Elizabeth (Greaves), grandson of Matthias and Cicely (Fairclough), who married Martha Heyes in 1911 (aged 39). They had no children as far as I have traced. I would be interested in any information you may have re William and Martha, who are buried in St Teresa's graveyard at Roby Mill. The William in the allotments photo is my grandfather, not the one who married Martha Heyes (although they are both descended from the same grandparents.
Hi Michelle. Can't remember if I replied by Email back in 2016, so here's what I found. No, your Norman is not mine. I found 2 Normans which may relate to your query: Norman born Pemberton 1901 (mother's maiden name Bryers) and Norman born Orrell 1922 (mother's maiden name Read). The second of these two may have been the son of the first? For both, though, I can't find relevant marriages of Speakmans to a Bryers or a Read. My grandad Norman married Esther Smith from Salford, and lived in Roby Mill all his life. A Cooper family lived at Walthew Green near Roby Mill in 1940s/1950s, and had a daughter Glynis (I have photos of her). Any relation?
I’m sure the man with the wheelbarrow was my great great grandfather. My grandma was a Speakman from Roby Mill, her name was Beatrice. She had sisters named Evelyn, Grace, Ellen and a brother whom I cannot remember is name. One of the sisters was landlady of The Star inn at one time
i knew everlyn speakman my mum was mildred speakman sister sheila speakman brother john speakman all lived in roby mill t pot road they were born x
When I lived in Toronto, Canada (1967 - 1972) I knew a Kevin Speakman who told me his family originated from Roby Mill.
Kevin was born around 1945 and was brought up in Blackpool.
I think he was a police officer in Blackpool.
I was born and raised in Ormskirk Road UpHolland.
If possible I would like to make contact with Kevin.
I am now 77 years of age and living in New Zealand.
