ORRELL is a township and village three miles west from Wigan. It is in the South-Western division of the county, and the parish and union of Wigan. There is a schoolchurch belonging to the Established Church, and various dissenting chapels. There was formerly a nunnery here, the grounds of which form gardens now much resorted to. Coal is found abundantly in the township. There is a cotton mill and nailmaking. There is a small charity distributed annually to the poor of Orrell, the interest of 100 left by James Thomason in 1730. The chief landowners are the successor of Lord Kingsdown (Roger Leigh, Esq.) and Meyrick Bankes, Esq. There is a station on the L. & Y. Railway from Manchester to Liverpool. The acreage is 1,542 and the population in 1861 was 2,934. FAR MOOR is a small village in the township.
