R E P O R T

OF

CAPTAIN OF THE FIRE BRIGADE

The Fire Brigade consists of the Chief Constable, one Inspector, one Engineer, and 10 Police Firemen.

During the year the Brigade has turned out in response to alarms of fire on 18 occasions. Of this number, two were false alarms, and five times the appliances were not used. Last year the Brigade turned out 23 times.

All the calls responded to where from the Borough, except one at Worsley Hall Farm, Pemberton, in April, and one at Worsley Mesnes Colliery, in July, 1893.

The loss through fire in the Borough during 1893 appears to have been only £74, none of which was covered by insurance. Last year the loss was £1259 which was covered by an insurance of £13875.

This year a four-wheeled Fire Engine Tender has been supplied by Messrs. Morris & Sons, Salford, in place of the old two-wheeled Tender which was unsafe and unsuitable for work in the Borough.

In June the two 350-gall. Engines were exchanged for one 450-gall. Engine of the Greenwich Pattern, built by Messrs. Merryweather, called the "Hilton". This Steamer did very good work at the coal fire at Worsley Mesnes Colliery.

The Town is now well supplied with fire appliances in the shape of the Steamers "ffarington" and "Hilton" both of the latest approved pattern of Greenwich Engine, and capable of throwing respectively 750 and 450 gallons per minute.
