I never knew Crooke Village in my days in the North but from all the photos I have seen of it on PAD it looks like a pleasant place to be & this is a good aerial view, from a church tower maybe ?

Comment by: Sue on 21st February 2024 at 08:12

Brilliant photo from a brilliant place. Your a star Brian.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st February 2024 at 08:20

Excellent aerial photo Brian. Is that vacant plot where once stood Crooke Hall built in 1608 and demolished in 1937?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st February 2024 at 08:29

I remember going to Crooke village many years ago with a friend, and seeing the canal behind the houses. I'm sure the people who live there are used to it but I had no idea what lay behind the buildings on the main road. It was like a little world of its own, a hidden gem.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st February 2024 at 08:50

Helen, I think the photo is from a Drone.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st February 2024 at 08:52

A very small village indeed more like a hamlet. I didn’t think there were any left …you can bet folk know their neighbours very well. Interesting photo today.

Comment by: Malc on 21st February 2024 at 08:59

Crooked Marina to the top right, a lovely area is Crooke.
Something different and most welcome Brian, a nice change.

Comment by: Arthur on 21st February 2024 at 09:13

Drome photos are fantastic and so clear. This is a very good shot and covers a great area.

Comment by: freddie on 21st February 2024 at 09:26

i think crooke hall was in the centre of the photo where the terrace of houses is now

Comment by: Garry on 21st February 2024 at 09:28

Aerial photos capture so much.
Cheers Brian.

Its a fascinating image...I have been all over the village now...almost looking in house windows! Is that Wigan Parish Church I can see & does anyone know what the large white house is up on the hill..left of the pic.
I never thought of a drone Colin !

Comment by: Arthur on 21st February 2024 at 09:46

I should have said DRONE....sorry.

Comment by: Elizabeth on 21st February 2024 at 10:28

I remember a girl in my form at HAGS,Veronica Banks, from Crooke. Also a lovely former work colleague,Val Bradshaw,RIP(maiden name Southam) who lived near here growing up.x

Comment by: DTease on 21st February 2024 at 10:42

I’ve seen the future and it’s drone shaped. It won’t be long before the Police, Politicians and every other Tom, Dick and Harry will be poking their lenses through your bedroom window.
Having said that the technology involved is amazing and produces great photos, as witnessed by Brian’s great photo.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st February 2024 at 11:18

No need to apologise Arthur anybody can see that’s a mistake.

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 21st February 2024 at 13:20

Great photo Brian, that must be the DW stadium top right,it’s good riding on the towpath through Crooke,Veronica,Irene and co it’s looking like you got rid of the riffraff with there false names etc good on you, going back to Dennis’s Snow Drops Veronica the man at the garden centre on church st just higher up than train station is very good for advice when you have problems growing certain plants etc.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st February 2024 at 14:34

Yes John I’ve had many plants from there as well. I got a load of mixed daffs from that chap in October. Soon be Spring. Also the garden centre off Park Rd is good and the one at the top around the corner on the right on the A6. Don’t speak too soon though - but they can only use so many connotations of my name any way….the last one was rubbish! ‘ Rev Ciona’ indeed! Got that wrong! Scraping the barrel with that one….And ‘RonnieKerr’…what a plonker as Irene would say. I was trained by an ex Bletchley code breaker I was….;o)) only joking but I saw through the names. Perhaps he or she will go back to Mick’s bike pump or Mick’s handle bars…etc, etc, etc. so boring zzzzz

Comment by: Rev David Long on 21st February 2024 at 15:03

From what I can make out from the old map I've posted to the Album, Crooke Hall was on the grassy area over on the right - beside the canal, just short of the Marina.

Comment by: John (westhoughton) on 21st February 2024 at 15:29

You certainly have a way with words Veronica and Irene hahahaha Chriss Green is having a meeting on the 8th of March discussing bank hubs etc everyone invited for questions and maybe answers,we will probably attend.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st February 2024 at 16:38

Not keen on him John.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 21st February 2024 at 17:06

Comment by: philbee on 21st February 2024 at 18:12

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 21st February 2024 at 18:53

Again, great picture and great comments. The trolls hopefully have been banished.
Let’s see what tomorrow brings!
Thanks all.

Comment by: Arthur on 21st February 2024 at 19:40

Thank you Veronica. An easy mistake. But nice to put it right.

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 21st February 2024 at 20:41

Veronica I’m not keen either but maybe find something out, you’ll be on a decent pension from your time at Bletchley hahah,Irene your both seriously funny,by the way KFC is a favourite with me also Macdonalds but Nando’s just pips the post, the KFC at Ince was probably the first to open for miles as your probably aware and was a regular journey for us,we where on the car park one day when the police came in with a transit police van knocking all the blue lights of the roof with that height barrier quite embarrassing for them, keep the good work up haha.

Comment by: Veronica on 21st February 2024 at 21:02

Let me know what happens then John…I have heard already there’s going to be a hub somewhere on Market St..

Comment by: Rev O'Cian on 21st February 2024 at 21:32

Crooke looks to be a very nice place. I never heard of it when I stayed in Wigan.

Comment by: John (Westhoughton) on 21st February 2024 at 22:01

Will do Veronica.

Most people on this site are decent human beings, there's always somebody trying desperately to spoil it with stupid none sencical gibes....Rev O'Cian.
You need to take a good look at yourself.

Comment by: Veronica on 22nd February 2024 at 11:42

Comment by: John(Westhoughton) on 22nd February 2024 at 12:11
