I drove up Standishgate to Wigan lane for the 1st time in years and was surprised how many shops there are along this stretch of road

That is such a busy scene compared to what Wigan is like on some days and I love the leafiness of Standishgate and Wigan Lane. I have walked up there many times over the years for appointments at the hospital, and thought nothing of the uphill walk.....it's a sign of age and bad knees that I now catch the bus! A good photo, Dennis, and a heartening one to see so many people about. I think the sun brings people out.

Love it!

You realise how ‘hilly’ Wigan is along that stretch when rushing back from Wigan Lane for the train! It looks a gentle incline but it’s not really… A really good photo Dennis as usual.

A different angle - I wouldn't have recognised that in a million years. Is St John's on the right side going uphill? Lovely photo, thanks.

As Veronica says it does look like a gentle incline, but when I have an appointment at my dentist I need gas and air when I reach the front door.

If I struggled walking up hills because of my weight, I would catch a bus to the top and then walk down.

St John’s on the right - set back then St Mary’s a bit further up. The Convent was between the two churches. St John’s served the Convent Pat.
I know what you mean Maureen I go up there once a week.

I feel tiered just looking at this.

Thanks Veronica. Used to occasionally go to Mass at St John's; the angle of the photo made the area look slightly different.

Is that Quentucky fried chicken on the right.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th July 2023 at 20:39

Pw, I have to admit that threw me for a moment, as KFC used to be there a few years ago!

Comment by: Maureen on 12th July 2023 at 20:46

Simon,I haven't got a problem with weight, my problem is with my breathing.

Good photo Dennis, it looks very busy saying there are not many shops.I wonder were everyone in going??

I too was wondering about QFC, I haven't been around there for some time so I'd no idea as to what was sold there. Apparently it was or still is a fried chicken and pizza shop, their website is still wishing everyone A Happy 2022, so probably not open now. A good photo Dennis showing the busy end of town, and the wonderful greenery along Standishgate and behind the shops on Wigan Lane.

Edna, they’ve been shopping in Primark and are making their way to Tesco for their cars.
