A clear act of vandalism. To let this house go to ruin is disgraceful.

Comment by: Alan lad on 2nd March 2018 at 06:10

Why oh why has this once nice house been left to go like this ?

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd March 2018 at 07:47

Why on earth is this allowed to happen to such a beautiful building. It's scandalous!

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd March 2018 at 09:00

I would have loved to have gone inside and looked around when it was lived in and to know its history. The owners must have been well to do certainly.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 2nd March 2018 at 09:05

I am speechless !

Comment by: irene roberts on 2nd March 2018 at 09:19

It's still beautiful, even in this state. I love the chimneys.

I worked in the offices next door for many years, and remember that the lady who lived there in the 1980s/90s was a doctor. Hard to believe and sad to see that the house has degenerated into this ruin.

I agree, it is such a shame to let this building deteriorate like this. Even more so when there is a housing shortage, it could have been converted into apartments.

Comment by: Maureen on 2nd March 2018 at 11:08

I believe it was owned by Mark Williams the butcher..there were plans to turn it into a mental health clinic, but there was a lot of complaints, all the fixtures and fittings have been stolen, and squatters have taken the place over..I've no idea who it belongs to now,if anybody..I bet it was absolutely beautiful in its heyday

Beautiful house, still looks very grand and proud, what a well designed place. Does anyone know who owns it? It's criminal to have let it fall into such disrepair.

I was born at this property,it was Park Vale maternity home in the 1940s.It was bought by the Williams famiy (Mark Williams butchers)and a lady member of the family was a doctor.

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd March 2018 at 11:59

Somebody must own it.... If this property was in London it would have been snapped up in an instant. There were quite a number of doctors lived on Wigan Lane. I know that Doctor Johnson and his wife from Greenough St surgery lived up there.

Soon have a nice block of centrally heated flats on this land.
They will be so handy for the young doctors and nurses whi work across the road

Comment by: David Barker on 2nd March 2018 at 12:58

House was owned by Mark Williams Butchers the last owner I think, I worked on the house many years ago in fact we were pointing the lead flashing on them tall chimneys , such a shame to see it in such a state, it was beautiful inside, a grand staircase, with stained glass peacock in the main entrance door.

The owners wanted to turn it into a half way hostel for mentally ill patients coming off the wards of Lakeside, they weren't deemed as being a risk to the public and it was to be a place for them to recover and to integrate back into society. However a petition by residents around the vicinity scuppered this plan and also another for offices. I've been told that all fixtures and fittings have been stolen along with an Aga stove, it has also been set on fire a few times by squatters.

For the house to be allowed to get into this state is criminal, local councillors have been contacted, but there is very little they and the council can do, the same is said about the Pagefield building which has also become a complete wreck.

Its simple. This isnt vandalisum its developers removing bricks and slates exposes the wall ties and then when the building is unsafe we can bypads the presevation order

Comment by: Julie on 2nd March 2018 at 16:10

Veronica, you beat me to the count . In London, as it stands , it would go for 2 million . Most are turned into flats keeping the outer shell, others knocked down, to build a more flats . Everything in London seems to be going to flats as there is the profit.
But , as Veronica says, such are gone within a week . How long has this property been like this ?

Comment by: Beryl on 2nd March 2018 at 22:24

What a sad site, such potential wasted

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 3rd March 2018 at 07:42

Think you have in a nutshell Bob the Builder.

Comment by: Veronica on 3rd March 2018 at 09:21

I should imagine the residents who got petitions up to resist a clinic or offices are gnashing their teeth! I know I would...what a shame. I just wish it would go to Auction and some builder would develop and renovate it.

Comment by: Ian on 6th March 2018 at 20:34

But! London is London and Wigan is Wigan.Hopefully, this property is not going to end up like so many properties in and around Wigan, which is...
So, how long is it going to take for a certain person to remove that historic building and then fill the plot of land with modern boxes?
Veronica,I believe Dr Johnson's house was on the opposite side of Wigan Lane, where the church is now situated.
