No reflection on John and his hard work - but I'm not sure I want to see our industrial canals prettified like this.

I hope it stays like that and not vandalised-there are some decent people amongst us who give their time up because they care about their surroundings! (even to picking litter up).

I agree with Rev Long, it can cause graffiti yobs to have a field day, especially to the white paintwork. I think originality is much better.
But that's just my opinion.

Comment by: Mick on 31st October 2017 at 08:52

Im surprised Rev, I think if the canals are made nice and tidy like John is doing they might attract more nice and tidy people instead of the yobs.
When John as finished on the tow path side he is going to do the same on the other bank, making the top lock bridge one of the nicest bridges in the country.
BTW John is paying for all the paint and plants out of his own pocket

Rev Long it is many a year since the canals in the main were used for industrial traffic . Today they are mainly used for pleasure. It is better landscaped than used has a dumping ground for beer cans.

Comment by: good old days on 31st October 2017 at 13:19

well rev you want to have a walk down the wigan flight of locks and count how many poo bags are hanging in the trees.I now its October 31 but they do look like bats.

Comment by: Pw on 31st October 2017 at 14:04

Well done John! The canals look much better than they used to do.

Comment by: Mortarmillbill on 31st October 2017 at 14:26

Well done John and I hope that the vandals leave all your hard work alone.

Comment by: Gongoozler on 31st October 2017 at 18:56

Not only his own time given, but he provided the plants himself.

Well done John.

Was it not traditional for lock keepers to prettify certain areas?

Comment by: Sonia on 31st October 2017 at 19:12

Yes, I agree that John is doing some sterling work improving the surroundings near to the bridge. Good for him!

Comment by: Crofter on 31st October 2017 at 19:49

You are not showing the work of your so called Yobs, why draw attention to yourself in that regard.. Do you think Poet could be Giovanni?

Comment by: Julie on 1st November 2017 at 00:48

Not a hope Crofter! Gio, Garry, Mick
Alan, speak with one voice...their own...good or bad. That is why they stand out. There is a special truth about individuality that says this is me, this is my voice..

As we all do -just don't always happen to agree that's all -there's room for all on here to agree or disagree -it's human nature.
