When I saw this picture I immediately thought of this poem. There was a Donkey Sanctuary in Ashton when I passed it I always remembered the words, the last verse is particularly poignant at this time of the year .

The Donkey
BY G. K. CHESTERTON
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

Thank you for this photo & the poem Tom. There was a time when I would have loved to have a donkey, but there was never enough room. They always look vulnerable, I wonder why?

We were very lucky to have had some donkeys....seems like light years away now. Made us and our children very happy.
These in the photo remind me of 2 of ours, Jack the light coloured one and the brown one, Jenny his partner. Lovable and gentle creatures

I have a story to tell about donkeys..a couple of years ago we were about to go in Botany Bay,outside were two ladies with two donkeys..of course I had to go to them,they had a tray with carrots on and a collection box..give the donkeys a carrot and donate..one of them explained that since the alterations to Blackpool beach some of the donkeys had been made redundant hence the need for donations for feed and stables..as we were all talking about these poor donkeys,the one at my side obviously thought my little finger was a carrot and he was trying his best to bite it off,until my hubby prised his mouth open,my finger was bleeding,she was mortified,I told her not to worry,it was my fault entirely..got it cleaned up as soon as we got home,
I rang B.Bay and asked then to tell the two ladies outside not to worry,it was my fault,I now have a bent finger..and I still love donkeys.

Oh, they're gorgeous! They look as though they're posing for the camera! Well-caught, Neil, and Tom, that is a beautiful poem.

Think there must have been a carrot or two dangling for this picture!
They look very happy.

How nice,there was not a single adverse (if that is the right word)comment about this picture!...But maybe I shouldn't comment on that!

Great pic!
You must have charisma Neil or did you have a carrot in your pocket!!
I remember once ridin a donkey on Blackpool beach when it took off. I was bouncin up and down and the owner chasin after it shoutin You owe me for the ride! It finally stopped at Central Pier and I scarpered into the Manchester Arms sharpish!!

Comment by: Neil Cain on 16th February 2016 at 19:01

Forget charisma Johnny, they just recognised one of their own!
