Another interesting Wigan photo Neil, the tracks lead you from the arch to the next tunnel.

Thanks Helen

Yes another interesting photo.

Helen what do you expect the tracks to do, if they didnt do what you said it would be the end of the line.

Another interesting shot. Thank you Neil.

When I was a kid many years ago it was a sort of rite of passage to walk through the tunnel.

Nice shot Neil. From Wigan Wallgate the line ran to Pemberton, Orrell, Upholland, Rainford and on to Kirkby, some parts are now single-track.
The once busy line ran from Manchester Exchange(closed in 1969) to Liverpool Exchange(closed in 1977). The Pemberton loop served this track from Hindley to cut out Wallgate and knock 10 mins off the journey time for Express trains.

Railways look much better without overhead power cables. They look an eyesore.

Nice one Neil. Different subject.

still patrol this section of track every friday. has for the tunnel if you saw the colour of the water that runs through it you'd be as sick as sick could be not a nice place to work at all.

Another good one, Neil. We can always vouch on you for coming up with interesting pics.

Where does the line go to?

Comment by: Helen on 19th September 2014 at 12:35

Now then Mick...you know I was writing from an artistic point of view !

This is a wonderful photo Neil, well done! The image seems to draw one into it, great stuff.

Comment by: Garry on 19th September 2014 at 16:00

How long is the far tunnel Cullie.

Comment by: Garry on 19th September 2014 at 17:03

Cullie you can't blame vandals for all the rubbish next to the lines. I can see a sleeper, a length of rail, drainage tops. all just laying around. What are per-ways suppose to do??

Comment by: Mick on 19th September 2014 at 19:11

The sleeper and length of rail could easily be dragged onto the track and cause a derail killing 100s of people

thanks to everyone for the nice comments
