Nice, clean, well kept, as it should be for a company the size of Heinz. But what happened to the light standard on the right, it is slightly askew??

Comment by: Roy on 11th January 2014 at 02:08

I've gone through THOSE gates a few times.

Nice photo, Dan.

Used to pick blackberries where this factory is now on our walks through to Porters Wood, in the fifties.

I remember when living at Marsh Green we would get wafts of soup smells. Ox tail was always the strongest.

Ken, judging by the vast number of lorries that come down the road before getting to the dead end and having to reverse back out, I would guess that one or more of them have given it a kiss over the years :-)

No longer owned by Heinz.

Depending on which way the wind is blowing, Kath, you still get that smell. We live off Prescott Lane but It's the beans smell I don't like.
Ken - the lamppost could be askew because it's probably been hit that many times with HGVs going down there trying to get to Martland Park & realising its a no through road.
Good photo, Dan!

So which department Roy?

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 11th January 2014 at 15:16

Thay were building the factory when we left wigan in the fifties. Was it over Whitley fields.?

Comment by: Garry on 11th January 2014 at 16:53

Loz, it says HEINZ, so it still is Heinz...full of Beans.

Comment by: Derek Platt on 11th January 2014 at 18:06

Great clear photo. Never been there myself but know two people that spent all their working life there, Billy Whittle and John Liptrot. To Dave Kelly, do you still live in Canada, if so where, maybe Halifax eh!

Comment by: Roy on 11th January 2014 at 19:03

Dave, bean filling maintenance and then soup manufacturing maintenance. Retired in 1992 after 20 years.

Yes Garry, the company is still Heinz but now it has parent companies since June 2013. As a result, there have been significant job losses and plant closures in the US and the UK may yet suffer job losses:-

Roy,I was familiar with those & all places (Standish & KG).Did a few years as a "green collar" in the office just behind the no entry sign in the photo.Left about 1962
Derek, we're still here,Cobourg Ont. ..closer than you thought.

Jean F, this is Kitt Green, not Whitley fields. They wouldn't have been allowed to build a factory in the so called 'posh' part of Wigan.

Comment by: Jean F (Wales) on 12th January 2014 at 14:30

Thanks Roy.Where did I get the idea of whitley fields from?
Usedto play on Whitley firlds a lot.didnt know it was the "posh" area of wigan!
