Is this the best that Wigan can do for a "Fair"

Comment by: Mick on 28th December 2013 at 00:12

You can just see the slag heap up near to New Springs/ Aspull area.

is that all that's left of the stalls?

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 28th December 2013 at 08:43

Can see St.Michael & All Angels Church in Swinley.
Forgot to get a diary last November in the Card Factory but got one on 17th of this month in Poundland.

No Ken R, this is just to keep kiddies happy for a little time, while mum shops. If you want to go to the fair, there always advertised on boards for Hindley, Ashton and DW stadium there in Wigan. Lovely shot Brian.

there isnt any room in wigan centre now for a fair ,the one which comes to scotlane area near the dw is good allways as a good crowd

Comment by: Roy on 28th December 2013 at 10:45

Is that not Haigh Hall Mick?

Comment by: Derek Callaghan on 28th December 2013 at 12:05

Would someone correct me if I am wrong but were those slag heaps in Aspull/New Springs known as 'The Bloody Mountains' once upon a time. I seem to remember my old history teacher George Derbyshire telling the class of 1963ish!

Comment by: Roy on 28th December 2013 at 12:22

No Derek, the 'boody mountains' were down Coppull Lane at the back of Central Park in the St Georges school area.

Comment by: Roy on 28th December 2013 at 12:24

Almost Kath, when the roundabouts are gone there will be stalls put back in their place.

Comment by: Garry on 28th December 2013 at 13:27

Mick and Roy.the slag heap is the Woochie hill at New Springs...Harry Cunliffe thinks its Aspull.

Comment by: Ken R on 28th December 2013 at 18:39

Location of Wuchie Rook, as a general rule the canal was considered a "boundary" between Aspull and New Springs, so the position of Wuchie Rook would be in Aspull, and New Springs is part of Aspull. Please lets not start the battle for Wuchie between the "Top Lockers" and the Aspull kids.

Comment by: Derek Callaghan on 28th December 2013 at 22:17

Thanks Roy, I wasn't sure but my dim and distant memory suggested a civil war battle on the bloody mountains site. Perhaps I am totally confusing it with the battle of Wigan Lane or am I now completely bouncing of at a tangent

Comment by: Roy on 29th December 2013 at 00:48

Derek, there was a battle on the 'bloody mountains' that's why they were so called. Cannons were fired from the centre of Wigan at the bloody mountains site.

Is this where the "new" town development is going to take place??
