How old is this canopy though, Tom? It was removed before demolition, but when was it installed? Is it the same as that on photo 15309 on bottom of page 4 under Market Hall in Places, in Album ? Photo 3652 at bottom of page 3 is interesting but isn`t "real". Found a grand slide show http://photopeach.com/album/ml6b19
of Wigan old and new, but can`t see canopy !!

Went into the Market Hall yesterday. What a shock, many empty stalls and it looks like it is on it's last legs.

"original entrance canopy from the old market hall"

Fantastic, Thomas. I walked under that canopy hundreds of times in the early sixties when I worked at McAvoys butchers in the old market hall.

Thank you for the memories...!!

Wigan3 you need to go to specsavers, there's nine in the shot.

When I left high scool 10 years ago this place used to be buzzing and packed! I used to buy all my clothes from the sports stall in the picture. Same with the galleries - it used to be the place to go on a saturday!

Anybody know what day the picture was taken? The council need to do more to get these places filled. Cheaper rates , cheaper parking etc

Comment by: Thomas Walsh on 13th May 2012 at 19:49

Jonathan, the photograph was taken on Monday the 30th. April ,at aprox. 1-30pm .
You make a very good point regarding the need do something to increase trade.

Fred I buy meat from McAvoys regularly but I bet they didn't sell when you were there what they sell today such as Zebra steaks.

I did not know that it was the original canopy, its a pity you don't walk into the old market hall and all its stalls memories we wish all we have now is eating places of some sort and why I don't know how people have the money to eat in them.
