I love how he has captured all the steam running alongside the carriages. Fantastic!

These steam train photos, must be very old.I thought steam was a thing of the past,or do thay still have in Wigan.

Comment by: COLIN HARLOW on 16th February 2010 at 11:32

I can almost smell the steam, as the beautiful engineered Scots Guardsman thunders through Standish.
This is what railways are all about. Superb shot, Stewart.

There are still steam trains in Britain Alby, but they are few and far between. They are used for pleasure trips on certain lines, the one you see in the photographs is probably a one off journey.Perhaps someone who is into steam could explain a little more.

See the notes for my pic of the same run, featured for yesterday, February 15th, for more about this excursion on Saturday last.

Comment by: David on 16th February 2010 at 18:19

Are you related to the Magnum photographer Martin Parr?

Comment by: Catherine on 16th February 2010 at 19:48

I can recommend the East Lancashire Railway for a day out too. The cafe at the Bury station end was just like an old style railway cafe when we went. It was great. And the views from the train were fabulous.

Beautiful machine - wish there were lots more running on our railways instead of those boring, so-called trains of today.
