Lowes  Marketplace 1910
Top of town, looking at Lowes Department Store. Lowes opened in 1887 and expanded over the years. It closed in 1985, just 2 years short of its centenary.

Makinsons Arcade  Makinsons Arcarde 1913
Makinsons Arcade opened in 1898. This photo was taken in 1913. The decorations are to celebrate the visit of King George V.
Bricklayers  Bricklayers Arms
A group of miners enjoying a pint at the Bricklayers Arms on Hallgate.
Hippodrome  The Hippodrome
The Hippodrome in King Street was one of Lancashires best known music halls. It was damaged by fire in 1956 and later closed down. George Formby Senior often performed there.
