|Man sentenced after getting stuck in chimney - Wigan
A 20-year-old man who got trapped in a chimney while attempting to burgle a flat above a supermarket in Wigan, has today, Tuesday, 20 January 2009, been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.
Daniel Mark Steven Davies of Smethurst Lane, Pemberton, was charged with attempted burglary following the incident at Tesco Express on Ormskirk Road.
He was sentenced to two months in a youth offenders institution.
At around 5.30am on Wednesday 22 October 2008 a man could be heard shouting 'Help, get me out, I'm stuck.'
The fire service was called and had to remove the interior chimneybreast inside the flat above the supermarket. Davies was found inside the chimneybreast with only his trainers and socks on. A hooded top was found on the roof and it is believed his trousers had come down as he tried to wriggle out.
Davies was arrested at the scene.
Police Constable John Catterall from Wigan police said: "Although there may be a humorous side to this case, the fact is that Davies intended to burgle this flat. Burglary remains a priority for Greater Manchester Police and through Operation Guardian we are committed to ensuring we catch the people who think it is acceptable to break into people's homes.
"People can help us too as it is a fact that one in three burglaries happen because houses have been left insecure. Please do not let these criminals get what they want. Lock up, and keep them out."
