Thief tries to steal purse - Wigan
Friday 21st November, 2008

A man tried to snatch a purse from a 51-year-old woman outside a busy Wigan supermarket.

At 2.25pm on Wednesday 19 November 2008, the woman had just used a cash machine at the Asda store on Soho Street.

A would-be thief rode up behind her on a silver mountain bike and tried to snatch the purse from her hand.

She managed to keep hold of it and the offender rode off towards the Fire Station on Robin Park Road.

The offender is described as white and was wearing a heavy black three-quarter length jacket with his hood pulled up.

Police Constable Andrew McCoombes, based at Pemberton Police Station, said: "This attempted theft took place when there must have been a lot of people at the supermarket, so I'm appealing to anyone who may have seen what happened to call us.

"I'd also like to remind people to be especially vigilant after using cash machines. Make sure you put your money in your pocket or your bag straight away and don't give thieves the opportunity to steal your cash."

Anyone with any information about the attempted purse snatch should call the Pemberton Neighbourhood Police Team on 0161 856 7188 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
