The pavilion at Mesnes Park
MESNES Park’s masterplan will be on public display at Wigan and Leigh College on Tuesday 11th November.
The planned multi-million pound refurbishment of the park received a boost in October after Wigan Council, in partnership with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, were awarded a development grant of £12,000 by the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery Fund.
The award means Mesnes Park’s transformation is a step closer to receiving a further £3.1m investment as part of Phase Two of the project.
In 2007 the two lottery groups awarded a grant of £1.8m to transform and regenerate the park. Match funding from Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Fredericks Ice Cream will mean the total investment planned for Phase One reach £3.4m.
A planning application will be submitted in the next few weeks for Phase One of the project which includes restoration of the pavilion, bandstand and Dalton Steps. The playshack will also be refurbished.
Concerns raised by local residents about a new training centre and car park will not be part of this initial planning application.
Andrew Bond, Parks Regeneration Manager, said: “The development grant awarded in October means the scheme can be shown in its entirety.
“This continued consultation is an opportunity for people to tell us what they think.
“Issues raised by residents have resulted in WLCT reassessing decisions as part of the project development.”
An announcement on whether Wigan has secured £1.9m funding from Heritage Lottery and the Big Lottery is expected next year.
If the application is successful WLCT will look for further funding to complete the whole package of works which will see the entrance lodge fully restored and used to support community activities. The main entrance, pillars, gates, railings and footpaths will also be restored and a sports zone created including a new crazy golf course, multi-use games area, refurbished tennis courts and extreme sports zone.
New lighting and CCTV are also part of the plans.
When the ten-year project is completed a staggering £7.9m may have been invested.
The Mesnes Park masterplan will be on display Wigan and Leigh College, Pagefield Campus, Walkden Avenue from 3pm to 8pm.
