Time To Honour Your Sporting Heroes
Sports Achiever of the Year winner - Daniel Greaves aged 15 from Leigh with Marc Woods.

VOTING may have ended in America but it’s only just beginning in Wigan and Leigh as the borough pays tribute to the unsung heroes of sport.

Nominations are now underway for the ninth annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards.

Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit it’s a chance to recognise people in the sporting community for their dedication throughout the year.

And this year there’s two new categories to enter; Team of the Year and Special Contribution to School Sport.

The awards are designed to highlight and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the borough’s finest sports performers over the last 12 months.

Organiser Helen Browne from the Sports Development Unit said: “Every year the awards get bigger and bigger – that’s why we’ve introduced two new categories for this year’s event.

“Wigan and Leigh are real hotspots for sporting talent and the awards are invaluable when it comes to thanking, recognising and rewarding those who perform week in, week out within their communities.”

Last year a staggering 114 nominations were received for the six awards up for grabs with the winners handed their trophy by twelve time Paralympic medalist Marc Woods.

Helen added: “Last year we had a record number of entries so we’d like to raise the bar even higher this year.”

Categories include; Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Rising Star – Sports Achiever of the Year, Rising Star – Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year, Unsung Hero in Sport.

The winners of each category will then go forward to represent Wigan at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards, apart from the two newly introduced awards which will only be specific to the Wigan Borough awards.

Each individual nominated will receive a complimentary ticket and each team or club will receive two complimentary tickets to the awards evening being held at the JJB stadium in February.

For a nomination form call 01942 828510 or 01942 404982 or go online at www.greatersport.co.uk/awards or www.wbsc.org.uk.

Tickets for the ceremony will be on sale soon but no nominations will be accepted after the deadline on 12th December 2008.
