|Woman raped after taxi journey - Wigan
A woman was raped after a night out in Wigan.
At about 4.15am on Sunday 28 September 2008, the 20-year-old woman had been enjoying a night out with friends and got into a taxi on Wallgate. A man shared the taxi with her and he was dropped off close to Pemberton Train Station and Foundry Lane.
The taxi then continued on its journey.
A short time later, the taxi stopped on Billinge Road, Pemberton, near to the Venture pub. It is then alleged the victim was raped by the driver. After she broke free, the victim ran off and raised the alarm.
A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and has been bailed until 9 January 2009 pending further inquiries.
Police are appealing to anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Clare Devlin, based at Wigan CID, said: "We are particularly keen to hear from the man who shared the taxi with the victim that night. I would stress we do not suspect him of any wrongdoing, but he is clearly a vital witness and his account of what happened that night could be the key to our investigation.
"I would appeal to him, or anyone else who has information, to come forward."
Anyone with information should call Wigan CID on 0161 856 7254 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
