|Temporary Closures for Shevington and Tyldesley Libraries
Shevington and Tyldesley libraries will temporarily close later this month to allow for essential improvement work to be carried out on each building.
Shevington Library will close from Monday 17th March for up to six weeks. The dome is to be removed and the roof recovered to address structural issues and to improve the environment for customers. Similar structural changes were successfully made at Golborne Library.
During the closure period a mobile library service will operate near the library. Further details about this service are available via www.wlct.org/libraries or by contacting Wigan Library on 01942 827619.
Other facilities at the library, within the One Stop Shop, including the police helpdesk, Wigan and Leigh Housing and Wigan Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Unit, will also be unavailable during this period.
Tyldesley Library will close for a shorter period from Monday 17th to Monday 31st March. The two week closure will see the library fitted with brand new windows throughout which will help to improve security, ventilation and the aesthetics of the building. Scaffolding will be in place at the front of the building beyond 31st March.
The Writers’ Showcase Event (part of Words ’08) that was due to take place on Tuesday 25th March has now been rescheduled to take place on Tuesday 1st April from 10am to 12.30pm at the library. This event is free, for details contact Atherton Library on 01942 404817. The children’s event planned for Thursday 27th March has been cancelled; however, a similar event is being planned for after the library re-opens.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Head of Libraries Taryn Pearson said: “The work being carried out at both libraries is essential to the upkeep of both buildings. We apologise for the inconvenience cause to our customers but we want to ensure that the library environment is a welcoming and comfortable one for all of our visitors. When the work is completed I am sure all of our customers will see the benefit of this work being carried out.”
Any items due for return during the closure period can be returned to neighbouring libraries. Tyldesley’s nearest libraries are Atherton and Leigh, while Shevington’s are Standish, Orrell and Beech Hill. Customers with books due back during this period will not be charged if they are returned promptly after the libraries are re-opened. Customers can also renew their books by contacting any library or via the web using a pin number which can be obtained from any of our libraries.
