Spate of aggravated burglaries - Wigan
Monday 24th December, 2007

A group of heartless robbers broke into the homes of five vulnerable people in the Wigan area on Saturday, 22 December 2007.

Detectives in Wigan are appealing for information about these robberies, whose victims were all over 60-years- old.

At around 6.15pm a deaf couple who live on Wigan Road in Hindley responded to someone at the door only to be shoved out of the way by three men, one of whom was brandishing a crowbar.

They searched the house then left via the front door.

Between 7.15pm and 7.40pm the same day, an 81-year-old man who lives on Soughers Lane, Bryn, answered his door to a man who told him he was interested in a house for sale next door. Two other men armed with a screwdriver and a crowbar joined the offender and they pushed past the man into the house, demanding money.

After telling them he had no money he was sat down on a chair and threatened with the crow bar. After making an untidy search of the house the offenders left.

At about 8pm on Windsor Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, a 63-year-old man answered his door to three men armed with crowbars who pushed past him, searched his house and stole a quantity of cash.

The victim suffered from shock following the incident and was taken to hospital.

The final incident saw a 61-year-old man living on Chaddock Lane, Astley, answer his door to three men. They asked him if 'John Smith' lived there and when he said he didn't they barged past him into the house. He suffered a small cut to the lip as they brushed him out of the way.

They then searched the house and told the victim to stay in the living room. They then left the house.

Officers in Wigan are now warning residents, particularly elderly and vulnerable people, to remain vigilant and not open their doors to people they don't know.

In all incidents, three white men, possibly with Irish accents, and carrying crowbars or screwdrivers, carried out the raids.

Anyone with information is asked to call Wigan police on 0161 856 7255 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
